Launched in 2020, the OneMillionTrees Movement is Singapore’s flagship tree planting
programme implemented by the National Parks Board (NParks). The initiative title itself says
its objective—to plant one million trees across Singapore’s urban landscape. The initiative
aims to reintroduce native species, particularly in ecologically significant areas such as
Singapore’s nature reserves and nature parks. It is envisioned to restore natural habitats,
enhance biodiversity, and restore Singapore’s native forests, including parks and gardens.
The trees planted are considered as Singapore’s nature-based solution for climate change
mitigation and adaptation. They are anticipated to regulate the city’s environment by increasing
shade, reducing urban heat island effect, and sequestering carbon dioxide.
Between 2021–2022, the initiative was able to plant around 190,000 trees. For their planting,
the OneMillionTrees Movement uses science-based approaches recommended by NParks’
Forest Restoration Action Plan, which includes the framework species method, assisted
natural regeneration, and maximal species diversity, among others.
